It is encoded by the AK6 gene located on chromosome 5q13.2. AK6 is a dual-activity enzyme, possessing both adenylate kinase and ATPase activities. The protein is involved in various biological processes, including gene transcription, ribosome quality control, embryonic development, cellular senescence, metabolism, proliferation, apoptosis, DNA damage response, and inflammation. It is also implicated in tumor development and has been explored as a potential drug target for cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.
