Originally identified as an ATP-magnesium/inorganic phosphate antiporter, it could have a broader specificity for adenyl nucleotides. By regulating the mitochondrial matrix adenyl nucleotide pool could adapt to changing cellular energetic demands and indirectly regulate adenyl nucleotide-dependent metabolic pathways.
