Background

Structural maintenance of chromosomes protein 2 (SMC-2) also known as chromosome-associated protein E (CAP-E) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the SMC2 gene. Predicted to enable ATP binding activity; chromatin binding activity; and single-stranded DNA binding activity. Involved in mitotic chromosome condensation. Located in condensed chromosome; cytoplasm; and nuclear lumen. Part of condensin complex.

Function

Component of the Mediator complex, a coactivator involved in the regulated transcription of nearly all RNA polymerase II-dependent genes. Mediator functions as a bridge to convey information from gene-specific regulatory proteins to the basal RNA polymerase II transcription machinery. Mediator is recruited to promoters by interactions with regulatory proteins and serves as a scaffold for the assembly of a functional preinitiation complex with RNA polymerase II and the general transcription factors.
