Aphidicolin is a tetracyclic diterpenoid antibiotic produced by *Cephalosporium aphidicola* that specifically inhibits eukaryotic DNA polymerases α and δ, thereby blocking DNA replication and mitotic cell division. This compound demonstrates broad antiviral activity, including inhibition of herpes simplex virus replication and anti-orthopoxvirus effects. Additionally, aphidicolin enhances arabinosyl nucleoside-induced apoptosis in HL-60 human promyelocytic leukemia cells.
