The Cypress Diagnostics kit Bilirubin Total & Direct is an in vitro diagnostic medical device intended to be used for the quantitative measurement of bilirubin direct/total in human serum or plasma. The device is not automated. The measurement of bilirubin direct/total is intended to be used for the screening for and monitoring of liver disorders or hemolytic anemia. This kit is intended to be used by healthcare professionals in a laboratory-based testing environment.

Bilirubin is a metabolite of the heme portion of heme proteins, mainly hemoglobin. Normally it is excreted into the intestine and bile from the liver. Elevation of total serum bilirubin may occur due to excessive hemolysis or destruction of the red blood cells e.g. hemolytic disease of the newborn, liver diseases e.g. hepatitis and cirrhosis and obstruction of the biliary tract e.g. gallstones.
