The human NT-3 recombinant protein consists of a non-glycosylated and non-covalently linked homodimer, containing two 119 amino acid chains. Neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) is a member of the nerve growth factor (NGF) family of neurotrophic factors, which includes NGF, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and neurotrophin-4/5. NT-3 supports the survival and differentiation of existing neurons while promoting the growth of new neurons and synapses. It exerts its effects through the receptor tyrosine kinase TrkC, enhancing neuron survival, development, and differentiation, and modulating transmitter release in the nervous system. NT-3 plays a crucial role in developing enteric neurons, supports dorsal column axonal regeneration, protects against amyloid-β toxicity, and is used in protocols to generate peripheral neurons and oligodendrocyte precursor cells from stem cells.
