Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a major inhibitory neurotransmitter. GABAergic neurotransmission is terminated by the uptake of GABA into the presynaptic terminal and the surrounding astroglial cells by sodium-dependent transporters, such as SLC6A11.
