In zebrafish embryos, Cyp26a1 is particularly important for the formation of the head, hindbrain, and somites. Loss of Cyp26a1 function disrupts retinoic acid homeostasis, leading to developmental abnormalities. Because of this, zebrafish Cyp26a1 is widely used as a model for studying retinoid metabolism, embryonic patterning, and the effects of vitamin A derivatives.
