Zebrafish express a single ar gene that is highly conserved with its mammalian counterparts and is expressed in tissues such as the gonads, brain, liver, and skin. Zebrafish AR is widely used as a model for investigating androgen signaling pathways, endocrine disruption, and the mechanisms of sex hormone regulation in vertebrates. It is also of particular interest in toxicological studies, where it serves as a biomarker for assessing the effects of androgenic or anti-androgenic compounds in aquatic environments.
