Bcl2a acts by inhibiting the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway, primarily through binding and neutralizing pro-apoptotic proteins such as Bax and Bak. This prevents the release of cytochrome c and the subsequent activation of caspases. Zebrafish bcl2a is expressed in various tissues during embryogenesis, including the developing brain, spinal cord, and hematopoietic tissues, where controlled regulation of cell death is essential for proper morphogenesis and tissue homeostasis. Due to its conserved function with mammalian BCL2, zebrafish Bcl2a is widely used in studies of cell survival signaling, developmental apoptosis, and disease models involving cancer, neurodegeneration, and immune cell regulation. It also serves as a valuable model for investigating the molecular mechanisms of apoptosis and the effects of pro- and anti-apoptotic compounds in vivo.
